Dancing

Dance classes engage participants' minds and bodies in a social environment. Many people with PD who cannot walk well report they can still dance. Studies show that dance can help with:

  • Balance

  • Walking ability

  • Balance and walking confidence

  • Movement initiation

  • Quality of life and sense of well-being

Dance for PD is a class that helps those living with PD and their care partners to reconnect while working on key areas of balance, walking, confidence, movement and overall sense of well-being.

There are many dance options for people with PD in Alabama, including general dance therapy as well as specific types of dance, such as Tango. Dance and movement therapists work with individuals and groups in a variety of settings.

Dance, whether experienced in a structured group class, socially with a partner, or solo in your kitchen delivers the same Parkinson's specific motor and non-motor attributes that other forms of exercise do while offering some unique benefits.

When you dance, you engage in a richly evolved art form, harnessing the power of music, imagery, and expression to experience movement in a fun, creative way. When you dance, you think about movement like a dancer - with intention, rhythm, and a creative problem-solving mindset. Many people with PD comment that dance can motivate you to start moving and keep moving, no matter what stage of PD you are in.

Dance classes can be a fun way to engage in exercise with your partner, and you can join any dance class within your community. From Tango and Ballet to Ballroom Dancing - pick what you find is fun. Below is a listing of PD specific dance classes available throughout Alabama.
