Mike Rowland, PAA Board Member and his family have worked hard to eradicate Parkinson's disease. 2022 marked the sixth year that Team Rowland has partnered with the Michael J. Fox Foundation and members of the PAA to raise money to fund research and to improve the lives of Parkinson's patients across Alabama. The event, hosted at Oak Mountain State Park, offered a "Par Fore Parkinson's" Golf Tournament on Friday, September 23rd and Rowland Road Series bicycle ride on Saturday, September 24th.
As a result, this weekend's activities raised more than $310,000 in funds that will be donated to PD Research for the Michael J. Fox Foundation and Parkinson's Association of Alabama. Since the event began six years ago - the family has raised just short of $1 million dedicated to PD research.
The golf event began on Friday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. at Oak Mountain State Park's Golf Course. 18 teams played in the tournament. The event concluded with a putting contest, lunch, and awards ceremony.
Saturday, the 24th began with a big crowd and equally beautiful weather, as more than 140 Riders launched either a 5, 10, 15, or 30-mile ride through the park. This year's event also featured a one-mile "Roll and Stroll" where families could take part on bikes, in strollers, wagons, or even by walking. Riders who were unable to make it to Oak Mountain State Park participated virtually from as far away as Australia.
The event kicked-off with breakfast and registration. An invocation, and the playing of the National Anthem preceded the presentation of the check which included a huge thank you to all participants from the Rowland family. Stacy Rowland's mother, Sue Neuwien, waved the checkered flag to kick-start the ride.
All who participated were welcomed back home with cheers and standing ovations -- lunch, a band, and yard games that included Spike Ball, Corn Hole and Jenga making it an afternoon filled with fun. It was truly a wonderful day of fellowship with friends and family working hard to put an end to PD!
"We are so grateful for everyone who supports this event, from the volunteers to the riders, the donors, sponsors, and vendors. This event would not be possible without their hard work and their incredibly generous, continued support," said Stacy Rowland, adding a huge THANK YOU to everyone who participated!
